Officer charged with aggravated animal cruelty in dog shooting
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KKCO) – A police officer is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals in the death of a dog in November.
Officer Robert Price shot a dog on Nov. 24 after he says it was becoming too aggressive.
The dog named Chloe had been wandering around a Commerce City neighborhood when someone called 911 so it could be picked up.
As an animal control agent put a “catch pole” around its neck, Price shot the dog five times, according to KUSA in Denver.
A strong public outcry prompted the Commerce City Police Department to turn over the investigation to the Adams County District Attorney’s Office to get an unbiased outcome.
Thursday, Dec. 20, District Attorney Don Quick announced that Price will be charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a class six felony.
He handed down the decision after three weeks of investigation, which included reviewing a cell phone video of the incident, 15 additional witness interviews, a necropsy of the dog, and more.
